Road to Recovery - Cancer Patients Need Rides to Treatment

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on December 6, 2009

Each day, cancer patients across Alameda County struggle to find transportation to life-saving treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy. As these treatments often happen on weekdays and can last a period of days, weeks, or months, it can be difficult to find family members or friends to help on such a regular basis. YOU CAN HELP by offering even ONE ride to a patient in need.

Volunteer drivers in the Road to Recovery program help patients get to the lifesaving treatment they need. Volunteer drivers donate their time and vehicles to take patients to treatment appointments and return them to their homes. They also provide encouragement and support.

Treatments generally occur on weekdays between 9am and 5pm. You are only be asked to drive patients locally, and are not obligated to accept requests.

THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY HAS A GREAT NEED FOR ROAD TO RECOVERY VOLUNTEERS IN THE HAYWARD OAKLAND, AND RICHMOND COMMUNITIES.

Help save a life. Become an American Cancer Society Road to Recovery program volunteer.

To become a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society, all you need is:
• a safe and reliable vehicle
• a current, valid California driver’s license
• proof of automobile insurance
• a good driving record
• to participate in one of our monthly training calls
• fewer than four hours a day each week
