The Kaha Garden demonstration project was developed to demonstrate how native and indigenous plants can be used for water quality improvements. The project replaced grass and invasive species along the stream bank with native vegetation to help demonstrate the benefits of native plants, the importance of proper stream side vegetation and installed interpretative signs to further explain these benefits. The project is located at 750 Kaha St. in Kailua on City and County of Honolulu Parks property. For more information visit:http://huihawaii.org/kahaproject.html The garden is maintained by volunteers during monthly service trips. Volunteers help to pull invasive weeds, prune native vegetation to promote healthy growth, spread mulch and plant native species. The work day will begin at 8:30 with a short introduction to the garden and the native plants and then we will break up into smaller groups and begin working. I recommend that volunteers wear shoes and long pants, sunscreen or a hat and bring a water bottle and a snack. If anyone is really hard core they can bring rubber boots and get in the nearby stream to pull mangrove keiki! We will wrap up around 11:30 and take a short walk out to Kawainui Marsh to look for native wildlife and discuss the ahupua’a history. Directions Kawainui Neighborhood Park is located at 750 Kaha St. (the intersection of Kaha and Kihapai Street, off of Oneawa Street in Kailua)
From Pali Highway, follow Kailua Road into Kailua. Turn left at Oneawa Street (traffic light intersection). Stay on Oneawa until you come to the traffic light at Kaha Street. Turn left onto Kaha, go straight at Kihapai Street into the parking lot. From H-3, take the Kailua exit and merge onto Mokapu Saddle Road. Go past the Kapa‘a Quarry Road to the next traffic light at Oneawa Street. Take a right turn, cross the Oneawa bridge to the second traffic light at Kaha Street. Turn right onto Kaha Street, go straight at Kihapai Street into the parking lot.
The next community work days at Kaha Garden are Saturday from 8:30am-12pm. January 23, 2010 March 27, 2010 May 22, 2010
