Volunteer Opportunity Details:

CONTACT training is 12 weeks of classroom instruction, one night a week, followed by 6 weeks of apprenticeship. CONTACT training emphasizes active listening skills while taking time out to identify the special needs of our callers. Group discussions address topics such as loneliness, depression, suicide, grief, marriage/family, substance abuse and domestic violence. We require our volunteers to work three, four hour shifts per month.

"I was at my church for bell practice when a small boy, about 7 years old, walked in. He was going to church looking for money because his mom and him were going to be kicked out of their hotel room that night. I realized that I really didn't know enough about the services here in Ocean County, being new to the area. A week later I read an article in the paper about CONTACT and how they needed volunteers. I really enjoyed the training and answering the phones so much that now I am part of the training team! There are no professional or educational requirements--we will train and prepare you!
