Volunteer Opportunity Details:
| Last updated on July 7, 2009 |
The Delaware County Literacy Council (DCLC) participates in a coordinated system of adult education services and is a key agent for change in adult literacy. The Delaware County Literacy Council is rooted in the diverse and dynamic communities of Delaware County. We see all adults functioning at the fullest capacity by recognizing and enhancing their skills. We grow through the spirit of volunteerism in individuals from these communities. Adult learners are partnered with trained tutors who work one-on-one towards student-set goals. These learning teams meet in DCLC's learning centers as well as libraries, churches and public buildings across the county. Basic literacy and GED classes are offered throughout the year. Classes are taught in small groups by certified instructors. The Council offers instructional programs to individuals for whom English is their second language. ESL classes are taught through English immersion and by bringing together students from a wide variety of language backgrounds. All tutors must provide a PA State Police Criminal Check, commit to at least 6 months, and meet with an adult student 2 times each week for 1 1/2 hours each time.
