General Internship: Come exercise your writing and editing skills, work directly with teachers and students, and gain valuable experience in the many aspects of educational programming, nonprofit administration, and event planning. Interns spend part of their time on smaller projects based on 826’s short-term needs, and most of their time on long-term projects, which they coordinate independently with individual members of the staff, and with the kids who come into the writing lab for help. We also offer a variety of free programs and services that interns are encouraged to get involved in throughout the school year and summer months including drop-in tutoring, field trips, specialized workshops, in-school assistance, and extensive student publishing. Additional position requirements: Minimum commitment of 15-20 hours per week for at least three months Excellent written and verbal communication skills Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs Editing/proofreading experience preferred Experience with kids in a professional setting a plus Spanish language and design software skills a plus Publishing Internship: We need help with our biggest publishing project of the year, our Young Authors' Book Project. We will be working at Mission High School with a group of juniors through the fall. Here is a description of your role: Assist in all aspects of the making of a book: help 50-60 student authors along with their writing; guide them as the content evolves and track progress of each student's piece; coordinate with volunteer editors; send student writing to editors and receive edited piece from them; help during tutor-student editorial board meetings and contribute to discussion to shape content into a cohesive book; help edit; help lay out some parts of the book; help proofread; help entering corrections. Some parts of this project require extremely quick turn-around times so working (mostly reading and editing) during some evenings and weekends will become essential. You will therefore be working on-site at 826, at Mission High, and sometimes from home. This project begins in September and ends December 21.
