400 hours is required for successful completion of internship THIS INTERNSHIP IS UNPAID AND NO HOUSING IS PROVIDED The Great Plains Zoo & Delbridge Museum of Natural History in Sioux Falls, SD is offering an opportunity for education and experience for tomorrow’s workforce. The Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum has several internship opportunities available to those interested in pursuing a career in education or biological science with emphasis in working with youth and meeting visitor needs through education. General Statement of Duties An intern in this position will be responsible for assisting Zoo Education with animal care, animal presentations, cleaning of pens, preparing diets and feeding animals, administrative duties, and other duties as assigned. Responsibilities Educate the general public about our animal collection and biofacts (biological artifacts) with accurate information. Primary focus will be the animals in the Education Animal Collection with a secondary focus on ecology and conservation. Assist educators with animal encounters on-site and off, which requires accurate animal knowledge, research, animal handling and some public speaking. Assist department with administrative duties to include data entry, phone calls, museum collection inventory and other duties as assigned. Observe the Education animals and Children’s Zoo collections for signs of illness, general lethargy, injury, and dietary problems and assist with general husbandry. Maintain a professional and positive image of the Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum by being enthusiastic, energetic, patient, kind, understanding and flexible for all visitors. Health and Safety Must maintain a current tetanus vaccination (5 years) and be willing to have an annual TB screening. Must be able to lift and carry up to 70 lbs. Reporting The Education intern will report directly to the Educational Specialist, assisted by zookeepers, other educators and the Education Services Manager. The Education Specialist will train, review and evaluate the performance of the intern. Requirements Requires a high school diploma or GED certificate. Candidates pursuing a degree in education, biological science or related field preferred. Must be comfortable working and speaking with all ages and abilities, have the ability to follow oral and written instructions, be able to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as assigned, and also maintain a valid driver’s license. 400 hours is required for successful completion of internship.
