Farmers’ Market Help

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on December 2, 2009

The Food Bank Farmers’ Market is located at the Community Food Bank and operates Tuesdays year-round from 8 am-12noon. We also have a second location on Speedway west of I-10 near El Rio Neighborhood Center on Thursday afternoons. They run like a small farm stand. We sell fresh vegetables and eggs right from the nearby market and demonstration garden. We also get locally grown apples from Wilcox when in season and a variety of vegetables from Forever Yong Farm in Amado. The Market accepts cash, FMNP coupons, food stamps, and credit and debit cards.

Volunteers are needed to help set up the Farmers’ Market by packing Farmers’ Market equipment properly and carefully to minimize wear and tear, assist with set up of Farmers’ Market equipment (including shade structures, signs, etc.), assure safety of all equipment such as electric cords, shade structures anchored, etc. Volunteers will also help to check bathrooms for cleanliness, toilet paper, and report problems to Farmers’ Market Manager. In addition, volunteers will clean up the Farmers’ Market area and assist vendors when needed. Volunteers are also needed to help take down the Farmers’ Market by assisting with take down equipment including shade structures, signs, etc, and to check Farmers’ Market area for any misplaced equipment at completion of take down.

We are in particular need of set up or take-down assistance for the Thursday afternoon market at the Santa Cruz River Park at Speedway and I-10. Set up would start around 3 p.m. and then the market closes at 7 p.m. Volunteers can help with one or the other or both should they be willing. Volunteers could also stay and help sell produce during the market time.

In addition, we can use some help with the Food Bank's own table, helping to sell produce.

Requirements are a willingness to listen and follow directions, willingness to assist shoppers and vendors, friendly and sociable, interest in success of Market and neighbors, English/Spanish bilingual is a plus but not required, concern for safety of shoppers and vendors.
Keen observational skills, and an ablility to lift 40 lbs repeatedly.
