AARP Tax-Aide is the nation's largest volunteer-run tax counseling service, preparing tax returns and answering tax questions FREE of charge. Nationally, over 32,000 volunteers prepared 2.2 million tax returns in 2010. AARP Tax-Aide is jointly sponsored by the AARP Foundation and the Internal Revenue Service.

Description:
We provide tax assistance to low and middle income taxpayers, with special attention to those 60 years or older, AT NO CHARGE. To find the site nearest you and its operating days/times, go to:

https://locator.aarp.org/vmis/sites/tax_aide_locator.jsp

Our volunteers manage and staff our sites, which are located on Oahu, Kauai, Maui, the Big Island, and Molokai. For volunteers, no prior tax preparation experience is necessary, although it is desirable (doing your own taxes counts!). Volunteer tax preparers receive free federal and state tax training in January each year, and those who desire it also receive training on the use of electronic tax preparation software that is provided to the program by the IRS. We also have a need for non-preparers to greet and help manage the flow of clients at our sites. Opportunities are also available for volunteers to serve at higher levels of program management.

New counselors should be able to devote one full week in January for training and certification as a tax counselor. New client facilitators (Greeters) require just a few hours of training in program policies and site-specific procedures. Volunteers are asked to serve at least 40 hours during the tax season (Feb 1 to Apr 15), or about 4 hours per week. Volunteers may request reimbursement for vehicle expenses incurred traveling to and from their training and their assigned site(s) at a rate of 50 cents per mile as of January 1, 2010. Supplies and materials used in tax preparation are provided by the program.

History:
AARP Tax-Aide Hawaii began in February 1979 with only three volunteers and has since grown to over 230 state-wide in 2010. Our volunteers prepare approximately 15,000 federal and state tax returns annually, with over 90% filed electronically.
