HFH/7RM creates successful homeownership opportunities for families with limited incomes by building sustainable housing and repairing and weatherizing existing homes.
Description:
HFH/7RM coordinates the labor of volunteers with contributions of money and materials to build modest, affordable housing and renovate family-owned homes in partnership with qualified families. New homes are sold to our partner families at no profit and very low interest. HFH/7RM works with individuals and families who live in substandard housing, who make between 25-60% of the area median income, who have the ability to pay the very low interest mortgages, and who are willing to contribute 250 hours of "sweat equity" per adult in the household. This program is "not a hand-out, but a hand-up" allowing any family to develop self-satisfaction, pride, and confidence.
History:
HFH/7RM is celebrating its 20th Anniversary! HFH/7RM was founded in 1990 and serves all of Lincoln and Sagadahoc counties as well as Brunswick and Harpswell - 31 towns in mid-coast Maine. Since 1991, HFH/7RM has completed 32 new home constructions and rehabs to help more than 100 adults and children. In 2011 Habitat looks forward to a single-family new home build in Topsham and a multiple-family new home build in Brunswick. The Topsham Build is partially funded by Mid Coast Presbyterian Church in Topsham and Bath Iron Works. The Brunswick Build is in partnership with Brunswick Housing Authority. HFH/7RM is expanding its Weatherization and Repair program with a goal of weatherizing and repairing up to 80 homes its first year. In February 2007, HFH/7RM opened a ReStore. The ReStore is a recycling retail center that accepts donations of new and lightly used building materials, fixtures, furniture, appliances, tools and other surplus items from individuals, contractors, and businesses. These goods are offered to the public at bargain prices. Monies generated from the ReStore help cover administrative costs.
