To provide at risk students with a 10 year program of sustained personal care and educational opportunities enabling them to graduate high school functionally literate and as productive members of the community.

Description:
"I Have A Dream" - San Antonio provides a supportive environment for students (Dreamers) and a program comprised of various components that will help prepare the Dreamers to achieve their dreams of higher education and beyond.
Enrichment, personal growth, health, nutrition,leadership programs; tutoring, computer lab.; higher learning preparation beyond high school. The "I Have a Dream"® Program helps children from low-income areas reach their education and career goals by providing a long-term program of mentoring, tutoring, and enrichment with an assured opportunity for higher education. Opportunities include clerical work,grantwriting, mentoring program,
tutoring, special events, fund raising, donations,
workshops,guest speakers, drivers, website development, artist for mural, pr/marketing/business
maintenance and clean up.

Volunteers must have a good heart and a desire to help others. Experience with kids or adolescents is preferred, but not required


History:
The "I Have A Dream" Program was created in 1981 by New York City businessman Eugene Lang, who sponsored the first "I Have A Dream" Project. In 1986, the national "I Have A Dream" Foundation was established. Since then, 180 Projects nationwide have helped more than 13,500 students (Dreamers). Currently, 74 Projects operate in 19 states and one in New Zealand.
In 1990, financial consultant Marie Pedraza Goforth sponsored the first "I Have A Dream" Program in San Antonio. Ms. Goforth adopted 71 sixth graders from Briscoe Elementary School. Of those students (Dreamers) who stayed in touch with the Program, 38 graduated from high school or earned their GED and 30 went on to higher education. In 1995, second and third graders at Lincoln Heights Courts, a housing development project, were adopted by the "I Have A Dream" Foundation - San Antonio. At that time, 100% of the Dreamers were living below the poverty line.
