MDNR-PRD-State Park Stewardship Program
Parks and Recreation Mission Statement: Acquire, protect, and preserve the natural, historic and cultural features of Michigan's unique resources and provide public recreation and education opportunities.
Description:
The State Park Stewardship Unit operates within the Parks and Recreation Division of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The Stewardship Unit strives to balance resource protection with compatible recreational use. To accomplish our mission, we rely heavily on a network of dedicated volunteers to collect native prairie seed, remove non-native weeds, and help with a variety of other stewardship activities.
History:
The Michigan state parks system was born when Legislative Act 218, P.A. 1919, created the Michigan State Parks Commission. Two years later the state park system was transferred to the Department of Conservation. In the early 1990s, State Parks and the State Recreation Areas merged to become Parks and Recreation Division. The State Parks Stewardship Program was established in 1995 and operates within the Parks and Recreation Division.
