Delaware County Literacy Council (DCLC)
DCLC is a private, not-for-profit educational agency that provides basic literacy skills to adult residents of Delaware County through a network of trained volunteer tutors. Its students are, mainly, volunteers as well; they have had the courage to ask for help.
Description:
DCLC's main office is in Chester but the program has learning centers and access points across the county. The services offered include one-on-one tutoring in reading and math, small group instruction, English as a Second Language, family literacy, GED and computer literacy. Tutors are trained in 10-hour workshops scheduled throughout the program year at county-wide locations. They are matched with a student based on mutual interests and convenience and commit to tutoring for at least six months.
History:
DCLC was established in 1975 through the efforts of a small group of representatives of local social service agencies who recognized an underlying problem with literacy in their clients. Two VISTAs were secured to establish the program, the second in the state. It was modeled after the one-on-one approach of the national organization, Laubach Literacy Action. It flourished through the decades of the '80s and '90s and bought its own property in 1994. After renovation, the core staff moved into the building in 1996. The program remains the only one in the county whose sole mission is literacy and has grown to be one of the largest and most respected in the state.
