HIAS and Council strives to advance the fair treatment and protection of the rights of immigrants and refugees, and to educate to larger community about the positive economic, social and cultural contributions made by new Americans. The agency provides assistance to refugees and immigrants so that they can become productive members of society. HIAS and Council serves individuals of limited means, and does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation, national origin or handicap. Each Year, our attorneys, caseworkers and interns serve close to 4,000 families and individuals. The recipients of these services are men, women and families; as young as 6 and as old as 102; of every imaginable ethnic and religious background; from Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and South and Central America. HIAS & Council had special concern for women and children who must escape government-condoned domestic violence, and has initiated a special program on their behalf. We welcome volunteers to assist with our work.
