World Savvy's mission is to educate and engage young people in community and world affairs.

By giving young people opportunities to develop knowledge of international issues, we prepare them for personal and professional success in our global community.

Description:
We run three programs that encourage youth awareness and understanding of current international affairs, either during or after school hours.

  1. World Affairs Challenge: An academic competition on international affairs for middle and high school students that builds important skills such as critical thinking, teamwork, public speaking and leadership. Community volunteers and teachers coach teams of students after-school or during school hours, helping them prepare for the culminating event, the Challenge, which consists of four events.

  2. Global Youth Media & Arts Program: World Savvy partners with 20-25 Bay Area media and arts organizations to teach approximately 300 middle and high school students about local and global issues as they relate to an annual theme. The young artists create photography, dance, spoken word, paintings, video and other forms of art to address topics such as "Peace and Conflict" or "Immigration and Identity" and ultimately exhibit their work in a professional art space.

  3. Professional Development Program: Staff works with teachers to integrate global issues into existing curriculum through individual consultation and periodic email updates.

In the 2006-7 academic year, we are reaching over 5,000 students through these three programs.

History:
In our fifth year, World Savvy has five full time staff, more than 200 consistent volunteers, and core programs that reach 5,000+ youth. The World Affairs Challenge began by serving 100 youth in 2003 and will serve approximately 450 youth in 2007. The Professional Development Program serves 40 teachers directly through our Teachers Program and approximately 200 through our Online Educators Network -- reaching 4500 students. The Global Youth Media and Arts Program serves approximately 300 youth annually.
