History:
Jackson Elementary School History: Jackson Elementary School was named for Andrew Jackson, Old Hickory, the seventh President of the United States. As 1901 drew to a close, a census was conducted in Everett with the intent of verifying a population of over 10,000 school district inhabitants. The census identified a population well in excess of the requirement and Everett became a First Class District in Feb. 1902. The eight room Jackson Grade School was constructed in the 3600 block of Norton Avenue and had a capacity of 316 students. The original Jackson School was constructed in 1902 at a total cost of approximately $30,000. Old Jackson is long gone today. The site is now a playground. The main building at Jackson's current site was built in 1948. In 1967, the north wing and library were added on. A complete modernization took place in 1993. Betty Cobbs became the Everett School District's first minority woman Principal when she was selected for the head post at Jackson Elementary School in 1983. The Adopt-A-Stream program at Jackson Elementary School surged from modest beginnings in 1983 to national prominence. Essentially, the program consisted of re-establishing a salmon run in Pigeon Creek, which cuts a deep ravine behind the school and empties into Port Gardner Bay. When the first salmon returned to the rehabilitated stream in 1987, it was proof that man-made environmental damage can be reversed.
