WAGES Nutrition Program for the Elderly

Agency Details:

WAGES Nutrition Program for the Elderly

Wayne Action Group for Economic Solvency, Inc. (WAGES) is a private , non-profit Community Action Agency dedicated to helping people improve their quality of life and health and gain independence.

Description:
The WAGES Nutrition Program for the Elderly is composed of two components, the Congregate Nutrition Program and the Meals on Wheels Program. The Congregate Nutrition Program provides meals in a group setting to promote the health and well being of older people and to provide opportunities for health, education, social, recreation services and other community activities. The Meal on Wheels Program provides a nutritious meal as well as a daily check and social contact for an impaired, homebound person to help maintain or improve his/her health and to enable him/her to remain at home as long as possible.

History:
WAGES, chartered by a resolution of the Wayne County Commissioners on November 15, 1965, was established to help Wayne County combat poverty. After receiving a Program Development grant, adopting by-laws and a constitution, establishing a Board of Directors and hiring an Executive Director, the WAGES office opened on May 1, 1966. WAGES has since evolved into an agency with 10 other facilities serving children, families and older adults in Goldsboro, Pikeville, Fremont and Mount Olive.
The Nutrition Program operates two congregate sites. There is one located in Goldsboro at the Senior Center on the corner of John and Walnut Streets. The Mt. Olive Nutrition site is located at the Sr. Citizen's building on Main Street in Mt. Olive. The Meals on Wheels program has grown in the last few years to include 32 routes in the following areas: Goldsboro, Belfast, Fremont, Pikeville, Eureka, Saulston, New Hope, Elroy, Kirkwood, MarMac, Dudley, Mt. Olive and Rosewood.
