Community Food Bank
Through education, advocacy, and the acquisition, storage, and distribution of food, we will anticipate and meet the food needs of the hungry in Pima County.
Description:
The Community Food Bank opened in 1976 and presently distributes enough food to prepare 32,793 meals every day of the year. Perishable food is saved from waste from restaurants, learning institutions, resorts, and grocery stores; other food is donated through food drives, from farmers, produce brokers, the United States Department of Agriculture, and corporations. This food is distributed to children, families, and individuals in Pima County through over 380 community-based agencies and organizations.
History:
The Community Food Bank (CFB) opened its doors in 1976, distributing 10,553 emergency food boxes its first year. In 1980, CFB moved to a new warehouse on 27th street to meet the increasing demand for emergency food. By 1994, CFB was providing enough food in Pima County to make 25,790 meals each day. With this increased demand, CFB once again moved to a larger warehouse. CFB purchased the MultiService Center at 3003 South Country Club Road to house the Food Bank's programs and lease office space to other human services agencies. Today, CFB provides enough food to make 32,793 meals every day. We have grown to a staff of over 50 employees, including three branch food banks in Green Valley, Amado and Ajo. CFB distributes over 13,000,000 pounds of food every year.
