Junior Achievement of Maine, Inc.
Junior Achievement's purpose is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy.
Description:
JA matches funding, volunteers and classrooms. Our K-12 curriculum is correlated to the Maine State Learning Results. Programs are funded by local businesses and/or grants and provided at no cost to the schools who participate. JA volunteers help young people use information, apply basic skills, think critically, and solve complex problems. Volunteers from the community share ideas and act as role models and links to the community. JA provides all of the training and materials and support to ensure a positive experience for all participants.
History:
Junior Achievement of Maine, Inc. has been "teaching kids how business works" since 1965. The initial after-school high school program, JA Company Program, brought teens together to learn how to run a business. By the mid-1970's, JA developed in-school economic education programs for grades K-12. More than 350 volunteers from various regions around the state taught close to 500 JA classes from as far south as Eliot to as far north as Houlton during the 2008-09 school year.
