International Institute Of New England
| Last updated on July 6, 2011 |
The International Institute of New England assists New Americans in developing the skills needed to overcome barriers to self-sufficiency.
Description:
The International Institute facilitates the integration of newcomers and host communities, alike, through our programs and services. Resettlement To welcome a refugee family at Logan Airport requires a van, a smile, and an open heart. To assist that family throughout their first several months in New England requires housing assistance, professional case management, cultural orientation, and linguistically appropriate navigation of services. Workforce Development Securing a job can mean the difference between paying rent and homelessness. Learning English is essential, and the International Institute offers no fewer than 30 hours of English classes per week. Job readiness classes emphasize interview techniques, job search strategies, and workplace preparation. Business Services The Institute provides all recently-arrived refugee families with basic financial literacy instruction and has experience running matched savings programs and servicing loans to small businesses. The Institute also offers small business development classes to both U.S.-born and foreign-both entrepreneurs in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
History:
The International Institute has, for nearly a century, assisted immigrants, refugees, and other vulnerable populations living in New England. We work in Boston, Lowell, and Manchester, New Hampshire.

Overall Experience

Working with the Institute is the best thing I've ever done!

I tutor ESL and American history to help prepare
immigrants and refugees for their citizenship
exams. It can be challenging, but I've met people
from all over the world. You'll get a very unique
opportunity to get to know people, one-on-one, and
to really learn about them and their backgro posted on January 10, 2001 |
