Agency Details:

Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary and Rescue is central Iowa's leading no-kill animal welfare organization dedicated to changing the lives of unwanted and homeless companion animals by bringing communities together to create a world of no more homeless companion animals.

Our mission statement:
To eliminate the neglect, abuse and abandonment of companion animals caused by human ignorance, intolerance and indifference. And to celebrate the joys created by the human-animal bond by education and example.

Description:
RVAS believes that all life is sacred and that every companion animal has the right to live a full and joyful life as long as it can be a quality one. We pride ourselves in making "lifetime matches" between owners and companions, resulting in less than 1% of our animals being returned by their owners. We offer in-home behavior consultation, which also has resulted in 86% of the owner surrenders who contact us able to keep their pet and correct the behavior.

RVAS networks with breed rescue groups to provide every companion animal the opportunity to be saved and rehabilitated and to increase their chances to be placed in forever loving homes.

Some of our programs include, neglect & cruelty intervention, education and awareness outreach, senior citizen assistance program, pet responsiblity outreach, spay & neuter to name a few.

RVAS also focuses on legislation to create laws that protect companions from neglect, abuse and cruelty by getting communities to toughen their laws, ordinances and endorse pet owner responsibility.

History:
Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary & Rescue was founded in 1994 and became Iowa's premiere no-kill animal welfare organization in 2004.

Overpopulation of companion animals continues to rise each year. Recognizing that for over 50 years shelters have been using euthanasia as a management tool to control the overpopulation with limited success, RVAS takes a more proactive role by including rescue services and an assertive plan of action to build the first animal companion rehabilitation center with a high tech, well trained rehabilitation staff to save the lives that needlessly die in shelter environments.

Good Opportunities for ALL Ages

I was welcomed and quickly put to use doing something I love to do. I'm a behind the scenes type guy, and was looking for an opportunity to help without being in the public. This organization found a place for me at my ripe old age of 75. Highly recommend them to anyone looking to volunteer and have a rewarding experience.

Excellent Cause & Professional Organization

I am an animal lover and was specifically looking to work with animals. Instead I found an organization that offered an incredible group of passionate and professional people on a ground-breaking mission in the animal world. Not only did they make me feel welcomed, in 9 months I learned so much more about animal care that I couldn't help but sign up for several of their other programs. I recommend this organization to anyone who wants to change the way the world views these precious lives!

Fulfilling and rewarding

I have volunteered for several different animal organizations. I found Raccoon Valley to be a fulfilling and rewarding experience, because of the constant effort to provide education on animal care. I witnessed on several occasions, two Directors spending quality time with an individual to help them keep their problem pet. Both outcomes were successful and I was proud to be a part of those particular cases and part of this organization.
