Service Ministries is the outreach arm of the Lancaster County Council of Churches. It seeks to identify human needs of people regardless of their color, race, or creed, and attempts to meet those needs with the love, support, and healing of Jesus Christ. Through its programs and services, Service Ministries both assists and is supported by local congregations in its work and witness to the Lancaster County and City.
Description:
The Lancaster County Council of Churches is a community of Christian congregations who confess Jesus Christ as divine Lord and Savior. In joyful response to the love of God, this council seeks to :
- Encourage ecumenical dialogue and worship;
- Establish and support ministries that meet human needs;
- Assist local congregations and clusters of congregations in their work and witness;
- Under the guidance of the Holy Scriptures:
a. promote education and public discussion on social and ethical issues;
b. engage in the struggle toward justice, healing and reconciliation for the whole community;
- Promote interfaith understanding and dialogue.
History:
The United Council of Churches was formed on May 23, 1947, now called the Lancaster County Council of Churches. This historic beginning was preceded by a year-long study initiated by the Lancaster Ministerial Association in May of 1946. After a series of meetings and a provisional Assembly in January, 1947 the Organizing Committee was ready to propose a Constitution, By-Laws and the organizational structure to the delegates at the May session. These were adopted by the delegates and the LCCC came into being with the late C. Abram Snyder being elected the first President. The newly formed Council of Churches had a four point program: religious education and youth activities, department of evangelism, church women's activities and community relationships and social activities.
