ICAN in Lancaster, Inc.
| Last updated on November 14, 2011 |
The primary purpose of this corporation is to improve the quality of care for all Lancaster County consumers of mental health services by aiding in the development of a voluntary consumer self-help movement.
Description:
ICAN is a consumer-run, voluntary mental health drop-in center. The board of directors must be at least 51% consumers. Currently, all staff and all members are people who receive or have received mental health services. ICAN provides social services to people with a mental health diagnosis who live in Lancaster County. The drop-in center is open Monday - Saturday from 12 noon to 8 pm. We also have a moving service where we move household items with our truck for people who live in Lancaster County who have a mental health diagnosis (within the county) for a nominal donation of $150. At the drop-in center members may use a variety of services that they may not have in their homes, such as cable TV, daily newspaper, access to long distance telephone, professional pool table, and computers. In addition, members and staff, who are also mental health consumers, are available to provide peer support and advocacy.
History:
ICAN in Lancaster, Inc. was founded in 1988 by a group of mental health consumers (people who use or have received mental health services) who were looking for a self-help model of mental health social services and an opportunity to advocate for people with a mental health diagnosis. Within a few years ICAN formed a drop-in center to realize this mission of providing a place for people to go to meet others and socialize. Members of ICAN are encouraged to participate with advocacy and planning in the mental health system in Lancaster County.
