| Last updated on April 2, 2012 |
Kāko‘o ‘Ōiwi is a Hawai‘i 501(c)(3) community-based non-profit organization. Its mission is to strengthen the community through the perpetuation of the Hawaiian culture and practice.
Description:
In 2009, Kāko‘o ‘Ōiwi entered into a thirty-eight (38) year lease with the Hawai‘i Community Development Authority (HCDA) to implement Māhuahua ‘Ai o Hoi, or “Re-planting the fruit of Hoi,” a community-driven project to restore nearly 400 acres of currently fallow land into a working agricultural landscape. Through this project, Kāko‘o ‘Ōiwi is creating hands-on cultural, educational, economic and scientific research opportunities for the benefit of the local community. Kāko‘o ‘Ōiwi is currently working to reinstate lo‘i kalo (wetland taro) that was historically prevalent throughout the He‘eia wetland.
