The James M. Barrie Center for Children, Inc is the coordinating agency for Etowah County providing investigation and intervention for children who have been sexually or physically abused or been a witness to a violent crime.
Description:
The Barrie Center works collaboratively with all law enforcement jurisdictions, the Department of Human Resources and the District Attorney's office to provide a multi disciplinary approach to investigations of child abuse. Our staff provides forensic interviews, evaluations and therapy for children who have disclosed sexual or physical abuse. In addition, we provide support and advocacy to the family throughout the process of investigation. Our staff is available for community presentations related to child abuse prevention, mandatory reporting and any topic related to protecting children.
History:
The Barrie Center opened in August 2002 as the child advocacy center serving Etowah County. We provide approximately 275 forensic interviews per year to the community. Over the past eight years, The Barrie Center has served 2112 children as the primary victims of suspected abuse and 4563 secondary victims.
