History:
The MAD* Factory was founded in 1990 with seed money from Oberlin citizens who were concerned about the lack of summer activities available to young people. The first programs attracted 90 children and generated enthusiasm for expanded summer and after-school activities during the next few years. The MAD* Factory now operates programs throughout the year and serves over 500 students annually. Theatre arts projects have included the production of more than a hundred shows, many written with the assistance of the students. The MAD* Factory has offered classes in creative dramatics, script writing, stage combat, video film making, African dance and drumming, improvisation, arts of world cultures, clowning, juggling, radio plays, and performing in front of a camera. In 1995 MAD* About the Park was created as a free summer program based on traditional African village arts. In the summer of 1998 MAD* piloted a two week Summer Arts Camp with a culminating performance in Oberlin College’s Little Theatre. Spurred by this success, The MAD* Factory now offers 4 separate age-appropriate summer camps and produces two full-length plays and 9 First Friday Improv shows each year. Our admission-free performances are attended by thousands of people each year.
