Entrepreneurship Preparatory School
Entrepreneurship Preparatory School (E Prep) & Village Preparatory School (Village Prep)are two high performing urban public charter schools where 100% of our graduates are college bound.
We emphasize individual educational growth resulting in above proficient test scores, graduation, and acceptance to a four-year college or university. This takes place in a technologically advanced, safe, and disciplined environment.
Description:
E Prep School & Village Prep School are marked by a culture of high expectations and no excuses. Every student can achieve and every teacher and administrator models relentlessness in this pursuit. The culture of high expectations at both Zealous Schools includes teachings around the 5 Keys to Success: Courage, Self-Discipline, Respect, Responsibility, and Perseverance; an enforced uniform code and code of conduct, monthly academic assessments, and many more best practices developed from high performing charter schools across the country. Additionally, entrepreneurship also plays an integral role as the center of our enrichment program.
History:
E Prep was founded by John Zitzner (entrepreneur) and Marshall Emerson III (educator, and Head of School) in 2006, in response to the need for new educational options for Cleveland families. E Prep is a public, tuition-free Ohio community school (also known as a charter school) authorized by the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. E Prep serves grades 6, 7 and 8. In the fall of 2009, the leadership of E Prep opened Village Preparatory School with 90 kindergarteners. Over the next six years, Village Prep will grow to serve grades K-5.
E Prep and Village Prep students are predominantly African American with over 80% of families considered low income. Most students (89%) are from the City of Cleveland, and inner ring suburbs. Both schools are unique, and in fact, revolutionary in Cleveland, but they are not an experiment. The schools are modeled after many very successful schools that have been created in other urban centers around the country. For one year before E Prep School opened, Marshall Emerson served in the Building Excellent Schools fellowship and studied as many as 40 high performing urban charter schools in cities such as Boston, New York, Newark, Washington, D.C. and Chicago. The features that make E Prep and Village Prep unique are actually the best-practices of the other high-performing schools that Emerson studied.
In the 2007/08 school year (E Prep’s second year) E Prep received the designation “Effective” on the state report card system. Effective is the second highest rating awarded to schools by the Ohio Department of Education. During 2008/09 school year, E Prep students outperformed the state average of all public schools in every subject area. Furthermore, E Prep’s 8th graders were ranked as the top readers in Cuyahoga County, outperforming Beachwood, Chagrin Falls, and Solon Middle Schools.
For its unprecedented success in reading, E Prep has been named a “School of Promise” by the State of Ohio Superintendent of Public Instruction for two consecutive years.
