History:
Palolo Elementary School is a K-5 public school located in Palolo Valley in the Kaimuki area of Honolulu. Palolo Elementary School first opened its doors in September 1921 under the leadership of principal Willian Kekepa. Its first buildings were converted military barracks and the school was next to a golf course that had been developed earlier. Later that golf course was turned into a public housing project that is now Palolo Valley Homes.



Although Palolo Elementary School has been losing enrollment, it was originally built to house approximately 700 students. Currently there are fewer than 280 students enrolled at the school. There are approximately two teachers teaching each grade level. There are active Head Start and tutoring programs at the school. Initially when the school was constructed there was no library at the school, but later three classrooms were joined together to create the school’s library.



Palolo is in an area with high numbers of students on free/reduced lunch. We also have a high number of students from public housing and a large number who are immigrants to Hawaii. These factors tend to make it more difficult for the students to learn the English language. Because of this, we are considered a Title 1 School; a special needs school, and a school that qualifies for the federal Class Size Reduction Program.
