| Last updated on September 12, 2011 |
The mission of the Ecumenical Hunger Program (EHP) is to provide food, clothing, furniture, household essentials, support and referral services to families and individuals in need.
Description:
EHP is the largest supplier of emergency food and other essential relief to families and individuals in crisis on the Mid-Peninsula. EHP provides an array of services to sustain families and individuals through crises and to help them regain stability and independence. These services include emergency food boxes; a Monday night hot meal program; furniture and clothing distributions; a holiday food and gift distribution; activities for children, and health education classes. EHP is supported entirely by donations from the local community of in-kind goods, financial contributions and volunteer effort.
History:
EHP was founded in 1975 by Miriam Nixon and a group called Church Women United. Their mission was to channel food and other resources to those experiencing hunger and poverty. From the original network of small neighborhood based food closets EHP now operates from a large campus, providing emergency and ongoing support to families and individuals in East Palo Alto and Menlo Park and the surrounding communities as needed.
