Description:
The Komen Central and South Jersey Affiliate is one of more than 125 Affiliates of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. sharing the vision of a world without breast cancer. All of our activities are designed to raise awareness in our community about breast health and breast cancer as well as raise funds. We have amazing volunteers that work tirelessly to spread the message of early detection to the community. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was founded by Nancy Brinker in Dallas, Texas in 1982 to honor the memory of her sister, Susan Komen, who died of breast cancer at the age of 36. Since then, the Foundation has raised almost $600 million for breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment. Our signature fundraising event is the New Jersey Race for the Cure® . More than 18,000 individuals participate each year, including over 1,000 survivors. As evidence of our fiscal responsibility, Worth magazine named the Komen Foundation one of "America's Best 100 Charities" out of more than 819,000 charities in the United States in 2001. Of the 26 health organizations named to the "100 Best" list; the Komen Foundation was one of only two organizations solely focused on women's health. Through the Race and other programs, the Central and South Jersey Affiliate is able to award grants to local organizations providing screening, treatment and education services to individuals in 13 counties (Hunterdon, Middlesex, Mercer, Monmouth, Ocean, Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Salem, Atlantic, Cumberland, Cape May and Somerset). Up to seventy-five percent of the funds raised remains in the community, while 25 percent of funds raised support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Award and Research Grant Program. To receive a grant, an organization must submit a Request For Proposal (RFP) that outlines their particular program. In 2004, the Central and South Jersey Komen Affiliate awarded almost $1 million to 25 agencies. To date, the Komen Central and South Jersey Affiliate has funded projects totaling over $5 million in the Central and South Jersey area. The Komen Foundation is reaching thousands of women every day and is investing in a cure for the future. The statistics remain staggering: a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes. Serving people, saving lives.
