Agency Details:

I Have A Dream Foundation Of Boulder County
Last updated on July 5, 2011

To motivate and empower students from low-income communities to achieve their academic and career goals by providing a long-term intervention program of mentoring, tutoring and cultural enrichment. Upon graduation from high school, each Dreamer is eligible to receive a last-dollar, four year, tuition-assistance scholarship for college or vocational school.

Description:
We are a drop-out prevention and college preparatory program. We provide tutoring, mentoring, college preparation, career exploration and other opportunities for the students in our program. We strive to assist these youth in achieving their academic and personal goals, as well as preparing them for life after high school.

When we receive the required funding, we identify and adopt groups of approximately 50 low-income elementary school children deemed to be at high risk for dropping out of high school with the assistance of local school districts and housing-authority personnel. We select these student either from a local school or subsidized housing-complex. Once we select the students we follow them all the way through school, sticking with them consistently.

History:
The "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County was founded in 1990. Our program follows the national "I Have a Dream" model established in New York in the mid-1980's by founder Eugene Lang.

While giving a commencement speech to the graduating class of students at his alma mater elementary school, Eugene Lang made an impulse promise that he would help pay for college for any students that graduated from high school.

Since the Boulder chapter's inception in 1990, we have supported nine "classes" of Dreamers, serving over 450 low-income youth and their families (800 individuals total) in Boulder, Lafayette and Longmont.
