History:
Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus founded American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) in 1958. She lived her life by the motto, “To serve, not to be served,” which remains AARP’s motto today. She founded AARP on the principles of collective purpose, collective voice and collective purchasing power. “An army of useful citizens” can do what no one person can. So proclaimed Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, an educator of rare vision and spirit who founded AARP in 1958 on the principles of collective purpose, voice and purchasing power. Today, we at AARP champion her dream through relentless action. We help people help themselves and others by empowering them to volunteer.
