Each One Teach One Adult Literacy Program

Agency Details:

Each One Teach One Adult Literacy Program

Mission statement is: To remove financial, economic, educational, health and social barriers in minority communities, and create opportunities through economic development, neighborhood revitalization, increased educational opportunities, elderly services, and job training in collaboration with public and private organizations.

Description:
Each One Teach One is an Adult Literacy Program that provides one on one tutoring to adults functioning below 8th grade level, seeking their GED or seeking entry into training programs. We use the TABE exam to evaluate grade levels in reading, math and writing prior to enrollment and 50 hour intervals of instruction. The clients receive one on one, individualized, student paced education a minimum of 5 hours per week. The curriculum uses computer software, videos, textbooks and workbooks designed for the adult learner. We use "real life" materials
such as newspapers, magazines, applications and reading of interest to the student. Also EOTO assists
students with supportive services to maximize retention and performance in the program, such as job training and placement services, family counseling, pre-GED and GED programs, public assistance and bus passes.

History:
"Serving a city with the care and concern of a village" is what ACTN strives to achieve every day as it expands the depth and breadth of its programs and services. ACTN has become a partner with United Way
of San Antonio and Bexar County in an initiative called Community Financial Capacity Builders (FCB). FCB focuses on designated city zip codes to target households for intensive financial literacy services through the use of neighborhood volunteers. FCB's emphasis on intensive, holistic support will provide long-term solutions to the financial challenges facing disadvantaged families. ACTN, with EOTO programs and others, has been bringing much needed assistance to the east side, one of the least served areas of San Antonio. They have been in service since April 2000.
