UI WISE (Women In Science & Engineering)
The mission of the Women in Science and Engineering Program is to expand and improve educational and professional opportunities for women in all fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) by facilitating individual, institutional, and social change.
The specific aims of the WISE Program are:
• To provide academic support;
• To promote professional development;
• To facilitate research opportunities;
• To establish and maintain community outreach; and
• To encourage global cooperation.
Description:
As an academic support program, WISE is committed to promoting activities that motivate and encourage undergraduate and graduate students to complete degree programs and pursue careers in scientific and technical fields.
As a professional development program, WISE is committed to promoting activities that empower women scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and health professionals to be successful and assume leadership positions in their professional careers.
As a research program, WISE is committed to supporting efforts to monitor the recruitment and retention of women as students, staff, and faculty, and to assess the effectiveness of WISE activities in supporting full participation of women and girls in science and engineering educational programs and professions.
As a community outreach program, WISE is committed to promoting educational opportunities in science for pre-college students that are "gender equitable." Gender-equitable science activities use gender-free language, require hands-on experience in small groups, develop component skills for research, relate the exercise to daily life, use goal-based competition rather than interpersonal competition, and support more than one correct outcome.
As a global cooperation program, WISE is committed to supporting activities that prepare women to enter the international STEM workforce; that support academic partnerships with foreign institutions; and that encourage the scholarship and professional development of international women in STEM disciplines who come here to study and work.
History:
The University of Iowa Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program was established in August of 1994 with joint support from the offices of the Vice President for Research (VPR) and the Provost. Establishing a formal UI WISE program was the first on a list of recommended initiatives put forward by a group of UI faculty, staff, and students who recognized the need for a more structured approach to increasing the number of women in STEM, in their Campus Action Plan: Women in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics, April 1993. The action plan was developed in the months following the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Conference at Indiana University, October 1992, sponsored by the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) and attended by 25 UI participants.
The overall goals of the 1993 Campus Action Plan were as follows.
To increase the participation of women at all levels in science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs at the University of Iowa, with particular emphasis for ensuring equal access and opportunity for women in STEM disciplines in which they are traditionally underrepresented.
To provide support and opportunity to all women currently participating in STEM programs at the University of Iowa, including women of color and women with disabilities, so that these individuals may reach their full professional potential.
To integrate the ideas, strengths, and approaches of women into the research, teaching, and service provided by the University.
