Quaker Housing
| Last updated on June 20, 2011 |
Quaker Housing provides affordable housing to seniors and the disabled on Madison's south side. About 75% of our residents receive services through social workers and chore service providers. Eldercare and hospice also come to our residents homes so that they can remain as independent as possible at Quaker Housing.
Description:
Quaker Housing has 70 one-bedroom units, Section 8 project based, residential housing located on Taft and Fisher Streets on Madison's south side. Quaker Housing is targeted for seniors 62 and older; 10% of the units are targeted for the disabled that are younger than 62 years of age. The average age of a senior is 71 years old. Some seniors have lived at Quaker Housing from 10 to 20 years. Residents' rent is calculated based on their annual income, assets, and medical expenses. There are a few seniors paying market rate rent but the majority of the residents' rent is based on approximately 30% of their income, with HUD paying the balance of their monthly rent. All utilities are included with the rent. Residents pay for their own apartment's telephone and/or cable bill. There is a community room in each building that has a large TV with cable service paid for by Quaker Housing. These are security locked buildings, with a buzzer security system in place. Guests must buzz the senior's apartment number in order to gain entry to the building. There are automatic entry doors on both buildings, as well as elevators in both buildings, to accommodate people with disabilities living within our apartment community. Public bathrooms are handicap accessible and some units have a universal design. Quaker Housing has a full time Service Coordinator available to assist residents in obtaining services to enhance their lives.
History:
Quaker Housing is a nonprofit organization. In 2007, Quaker Housing went through a major upgrade and improvements process on the exterior. New shingles, siding, and two parking lots were redone. A new large concrete patio was added, some sidewalks and approaches to the building have also been redone along with some landscaping. Quaker Housing is becoming the gem of this southside Madison neighborhood. The Quaker Housing community dining room was expanded by over 100% to accommodate more seniors for the Monday - Friday senior nutrition lunch program offered at Quaker Housing. Seniors in the neighborhood as well as Quaker Housing residents are eligible for the senior lunch. The South Madison Aging Coalition provides supervision of the nutrition lunch program, as well as offering other senior activities at Quaker Housing three times a week.
