Tabor Youth Development Center
The Tabor Youth Development Center is dedicated to serve our city's (Philadelphia's) diverse population through programming that is intended to foster education and inspire civic leadership in a safe and structured environment.
Description:
The Tabor Youth Development Center began in 2000 as a volunteer program and quickly evolved into a professionally run operation with a strong emphasis on homework completion and literacy training. Four or five paid teachers, tutors, literacy specialist and several volunteers serve about sixty students annually. The staff takes literacy seriously as one of the constants of good education. Students struggling with reading receive one to one literacy training and are tested three times a year for Instructional Reading Levels. Immigrant children and ESL students especially benefit from the program and its staff, which includes two bilingual tutors. One third of the student body speaks English as a second language at home. Our tests over several years have shown that students who are part of the one to one literacy training (students who enter with poor literacy skills) consistency improve their reading proficiency at higher than usual average rates. The program staff is dedicated to improve the education of under-privilaged children with balanced and high quality after school care. With tuition of only $35.00 a month for each student. The transportation fee is $35 per month, this depends on outside help, which at this point comes mostly from small and mid-size local foundations. Tabor Summer Camps likewise have been offered since 2000 and have continued to grow and gathered a reputation for great service on inexpensive rates. Tabor summer camps typically offer a mix of education and recreation activities. In 2006 and 2007 we served for six weeks. The services include quality after school care, summer program, as well as work preparation and civic leadership development programs for youth. We serve youths from ages 5 through 14 years of age.
