Lowcountry House Rabbit Society
Logo

Lowcountry House Rabbit Society is dedicated to rescuing rabbits in danger of euthanisation at shelters as well as those who have been abandoned and/or neglected. The rabbits are placed with indoor foster homes until permanent homes can be found that meet our qualifications. Furthermore, Lowcountry HRS is dedicated to providing education to both children and adults so that rabbits are treated as part of the family and cared for properly.

Lowcountry HRS serves the SC Lowcountry area (in and near Charleston, SC).

Description:
Lowcountry HRS is a branch (soon to become chapter) of the national House Rabbit Society. We are made up entirely of volunteers, and all of our funding is made up of donations from individuals and private organisations, or fundraisers held by our volunteers. We are working hard to "get the word out" in the SC Lowcountry area that rabbits are intelligent, playful, and loving animals who deserve to be loved and respected, as well as provided with proper physical needs.

Our main goals are education, rescue, foster, and adoption. All adopters are carefully screened to ensure as best as possible that the rabbit(s) will have a loving, safe and happy home for the duration of his/her/their life (lives).

Education takes place in many formats ranging from experienced educators who field phone calls and emails assisting with rabbit care questions, to elementary school classes taught throughout the area.

History:
Lowcountry House Rabbit Society began in late 2003 as a small branch of the North Georgia Chapter of the House Rabbit Society. HRS (House Rabbit Society) is a national organization with about 50 chapters around the country (and one in Canada). There was no chapter in South Carolina, and when a rescue situation was needed for a small rabbit named Cocoa, Lowcountry HRS' founder Jenni Beard asked for backing from North Georgia to rescue her. The group is still small, but now has 15-20 regular volunteers. Beginning in spring of 2006, we started an educational program in several Charleston county elementary schools in conjunction with the John Ancrum SPCA. This allows us the opportunity to get into the schools and teach children, primarily 4th and 5th graders, about the responsibility of caring for a rabbit as well as the proper ways of doing so. We are also proud to have been working with 3 area Petsmart stores since they opened, and have turned their "cat adoption centers" into "cat and rabbit adoption centers"!

As of late 2007, we became our own official chapter of the National House Rabbit Society (www.rabbit.org). We also have our independent 501c3 status. As such, we are needing to grow our foster and volunteer group to rescue more rabbits!
