History:
Service to the poor has been an integral part of the ministry of the parishes in Southwest Detroit since their foundation. In response to increased poverty and requests for food assistance in the Southwest Detroit, the parishes formed a collaboration in 2005 to increase efficiency, reduce duplication of services, and share resources and programs. In 2009 to better serve the needs of the pantries, the collaborative applied and obtained non-profit,tax exempt, 501(c)3, status. The population served by the pantries includes the elderly, those on fixed income, the working poor and the homeless from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds from the immediate vicinity and beyond the parish boundaries. The number of persons approaching the Loaves and Fishes Southwest Detroit (LFSD) supported Food Pantries for assistance has been steadily increasing in the past three years. The increase reflects the loss of jobs, the increase in the prices of food, rising utility costs and the changes in the federal and state social service programs. Homeless, unemployed, under-employed, elderly, SSI, SSD, and FIA recipients are among the almost households in the pantry database.
